Spencer was natural in Kosciusko plus his primary feel affection for was music, performing in astound bands making a recording. Spencer a lot manipulates his photographs in the darkroom. Spencer's Lost Boys series came about because of mistreatment he saw in Nashville where a young young man Pel Gai was murdered in a nightspot there. Pel Gai is as of the Southern part of Sudan and about 150 refugees were sent to Nashville after reaching a person in exile camp in Kenya.

Spencer's work was also included in The South By Its Photographers by means of many other Southern artists including Shelby Lee Adams, William Christenberry, and Melissa Springer. This exhibition was exposed at the Birmingham Museum of Painting, Columbia Museum of Painting, plus Louisiana Middle intended for Arts plus Sciences. The exhibit spurred the careers of these photographers plus was too complete keen on a volume by Susan Sipple Elliott. Spencer's work was also selected to be in Picturing the South curated by Ellen Fleurov.
