Throughout this tenure, Kraft, who had been a scholar of Paul Hindemith in Berlin, invigorated the practice of evening concerts of sacred works. His discography too built-in pieces by additional difficult to understand German baroque musicians such as Nikolaus Bruhns. Similar to his younger contemporary Anton Heiller, Kraft also composed a pale quantity (mostly organ melody but also an oratorio called Christus), though as with Heiller, his fame as a performer completely upstaged his hopes of lasting renown as a maker.

Once he retired in 1972 from the Marienkirche position, he apparently planned to mark an opera, other than never finished any such work. He died the length of with 32 others when Amsterdam's Hotel Poland caught fire.
