Realizing the machines' insurmountable compensation, the person race began to consider alternative methods to ground battles with machine armies. In an effort to stop the advance and push Nothing One's forces rear, Operation Dark Storm was implemented. The mission's objective was to create a thick, indissoluble cloud in the upper levels of the stratosphere, blocking sunlight from attainment Earth's surface, plus thus depriving the machines of their major basis of power. It is assumed so as to the United Nations possessed a income of dissipating the cloud in the event of human victory.

Though, the operation did not go according to plan, plus instead of creating a centralized atmospheric layer over the Center East, the nanomachines which shaped the cloud spread through the atmosphere, enveloping the entire planet in the oppressive darkness. With human governments destroyed and human armies unable to offer resistance, Zero One became the supreme authority in excess of the Earth.
